Oneonta
is an Oneida Native American word for "cliffs abound," or "exposed rock in side of the hills," and the town of Oneonta is indeed surrounded by hills. It's located in the Central "Leatherstocking" region of New York on the western edge of the Catskills Mountains, approximately 54 miles northeast of Binghamton on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The community was originally the site of a major railroad car building manufacturer for the Albany & Susquehanna Railroad line in 1863. Today, the city of Oneonta has a population of around 14,000 and retains an appealing small town atmosphere, yet has many amenities and services to offer visitors. Red brick sidewalks and turn-of-the-20th-century style street lamps, as well as the colorful town plaza creates a "Norman Rockwell" type ambience to the town. Many of the buildings have century old architecture and Main Street is the heart of the shopping district, where you'll find a variety of specialty shops, antique stores and other locally owned businesses. Attractions in the town of Oneonta include the National Soccer Hall of Fame, the Science Discovery Center of Oneonta and the Yager Museum. It is approximately a half-hour drive to Otsego Lake and the town of Cooperstown, known internationally as home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Outdoor recreational activities in the area include swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding, golf and tours of Otsego Lake on board the Glimmerglass Queen.

The Catskills region region has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, but without the stifling, oppressive heat and humidity of some coastal areas. Normally, the hottest week of the year in the Catskills is the third week of July. September offers mild days and cool nights and October is a kaleidoscope of color in the Catskills. "Jack Frost" will likely make his first appearance in October in the region. November is unpredictable and with December comes colder temperatures and more moisture - either in the form of rain or snow. The full force of the winter season arrives in January and stays around until March in the Catskills. Average January temperatures are a good three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at over two thousand feet.
