Stamford
is a historical, old railroad town located in Delaware County in the southern Catskills region of the state. Trappers first settled the town in the 1700s, and in the 1800s, it became a busy distribution center for farmers for their growing butter industry. With the building of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, the area around Stamford became a tourist resort area, due to its beautiful location in the Catskills. By the early 1900s, there were over fifty guesthouses, hotels and rooming houses operating in the village of Stamford, including the historic Stamford and Delaware Inn, which is still in operation today. One of the main attractions to the town of Stamford was Mt. Utsayantha, at an elevation of 3,365 feet. It opened in 1882 as a tourist recreational spot and offered breathtaking views of the Village of Stamford, as well as the Catskill Mountains, the Berkshires and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Other attractions in Stamford include the 100-acre Churchill Park Historic District, which is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. The park includes two man-made lakes, tree-lined streets and historic summer homes. The Catskill Scenic Trail also begins in Stamford and takes visitors on a 19-mile, easy biking/hiking trail along the West Branch of the Delaware River. Other activities in the area include horseback riding, swimming, golf, tennis, fishing, boating and downhill and cross-country skiing.

The Catskills region region has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, but without the stifling, oppressive heat and humidity of some coastal areas. Normally, the hottest week of the year in the Catskills is the third week of July. September offers mild days and cool nights and October is a kaleidoscope of color in the Catskills. "Jack Frost" will likely make his first appearance in October in the region. November is unpredictable and with December comes colder temperatures and more moisture - either in the form of rain or snow. The full force of the winter season arrives in January and stays around until March in the Catskills. Average January temperatures are a good three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at over two thousand feet.
