Margaretville sits on the edge of the Catkills State Park in Delaware County in the southern region of the state. This tiny town of only 639 residents is nevertheless known as "The Biggest Little Town in the Catskills" and has become a popular getaway for tourists. It's located between two state highways and is just a two and a half-hour drive from New York City. A four-season "back-country playground for grown-ups," Margaretville doesn't have much in the way of nightlife, in fact, it's the only town with a supermarket in eastern Delaware County, but that doesn't stop people from flocking to the area. What it does offer is rolling hills and country backroads, loads of hiking trails, trout fishing streams, waterfalls and reservoirs. The town sits right on the northwestern edge of the Catskill Park, where forests and farmland meet the Delaware River. There are two golf courses in town, art galleries, specialty shops, village pubs, farmers markets, restaurants and an Italian grocery store. Many residents are city transplants who are writers, artists, graphic designers or others who enjoy the freedom of working from home. Outdoor activities abound in the area, including hiking, fly fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, tubing and rafting on the river and skiing. Nearby, the Belleayre Summer Music Festival is held on the ski slopes in July and August.

Margaretville Weather & Climate

The Catskills region region has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, but without the stifling, oppressive heat and humidity of some coastal areas. Normally, the hottest week of the year in the Catskills is the third week of July. September offers mild days and cool nights and October is a kaleidoscope of color in the Catskills. "Jack Frost" will likely make his first appearance in October in the region. November is unpredictable and with December comes colder temperatures and more moisture - either in the form of rain or snow. The full force of the winter season arrives in January and stays around until March in the Catskills. Average January temperatures are a good three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at over two thousand feet.
