Jefferson is located in Schoharie County in the Northern Catskill Region of the state. It's a small village with a population of about 1,200, approximately 21 miles from the town of Cooperstown. Set in a picturesque region, Jefferson makes an ideal day trip from the state capital, or for anyone looking for a quiet, scenic destination away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. As part of Schoharie County, the village of Jefferson offers a hometown experience with small, friendly businesses and plenty of outdoor recreation. The area is made up of rolling hills and peaceful farmland, woodland trails, lakes and streams and waterfalls. Activities in Jefferson include hiking, fishing, swimming, biking, camping, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Downhill skiing at Hunter Mountain is just 45 minutes away. The town of Jefferson is tranquil, with a pretty village green and several historical sites, including the Maple Museum and "Heartbreak Hotel." Nearby Cooperstown is the site of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and boat rides are available on Otsego Lake, also known as "Glimmerglass Lake." Cooperstown is also home to the Glimmerglass State Park and a well-known Farmer's Market, which holds many special events throughout the year, including a holiday "Candlelight Evening at The Farmer's Market."

West Central New York has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers with moderate humidity. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 inches to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt, with the heaviest received in the northeast portion of the region. Autumn is crisp, cool and sunny, perfect weather for sightseeing and fall color tours along the country roads. Generally, colors peak the first three weeks of October. The first frost of the season is generally in late September or early October. Spring arrives in March, although temperatures usually remain cool throughout the month. Central New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
