Cherry-Valley
is a beautiful little village located in Otsego County in central New York, and is a delight for anyone interested in Early American history. The town is full of old buildings and has a fascinating background; as well as picturesque views and a quiet natural beauty. It dates back to the year 1738, when seven Scotch-Irish families joined founder John Lindsay to begin farming the area. Although it's off the beaten path today, it was a gateway to the American Frontier in its day, due to its strategic location along the ridge of mountains that run east to west of town, and its nearness to the Mohawk River. Cherry Valley was an important link between the Mohawk and the other nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. This favored location along the ridge also made it part of the natural route east to west for settlers, as well. Many of the distinctive buildings in Cherry Valley date from the first half of the nineteenth century, and it's a nice town for self-guided walking tours. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 greatly reduced the importance of Cherry Valley as a thoroughfare, and the building of the railroad diminished the route even further. Cherry Valley is near Belvedere Lake which offers camping and a 9-hole golf course, hiking and picnicking. The village also boasts several museums, fine dining, and many bed & breakfasts and historic inns. It makes a lovely, quiet get-a-way that is definitely well worth the trip.

The Heartland of New York contains over 9,000 square miles of glacial lakes, rolling hills and beautiful valleys. This region has a distinct four-season climate with comfortable summers and moderate humidity and cold, snowy winters. The Syracuse area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Average summer temperatures are 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 inches to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt, with the heaviest received in the northeast segment of the region. Though brief, autumn is crisp, clear and cool - perfect weather for sightseeing along the country roads. The first frost of the season is generally in late September or early October.
