Rushford
is a small community located in the western part of the state, approximately 55 miles south of Buffalo and 60 miles south of Niagara Falls. The town of Rushford is centrally located to many year round activities and is near the Letchworth State Park, Allegany State Park and Moss Lake, a wildlife sanctuary. There are endless golf courses in the area and the village of Rushford is just a short drive to many area ski resorts. Nearby Ellicottville, in fact, bills itself as the "Aspen of the East," and offers a quaint retreat with a main street filled with gift shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes, and it's home to two of the state's largest ski areas, Holiday Valley and Holimont. Wintertime activities are not limited to downhill skiing, but also include sledding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing. Rock City Park is located in another neighboring town of Rushford and is very popular with hikers. This park reportedly has one of the largest exposures of quartz granite boulders, with a three-mile long hiking trail that leads right through them. Lake Chautauqua is about 35 miles from Rushford and offers even more outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, hiking and picnicking. In addition, boat cruises are offered on the lake, and public boating access and shoreline fishing are available at the Pendergast Point boat launch and Long Point State Park.

A four-season climate with lots of snow in winter and pleasant summers describes the weather in western New York near Buffalo. In summer, sunshine is plentiful and humidity levels are moderate. The stabilizing effect of Lake Erie helps inhibit thunderstorms and enhance sunshine in the immediate Buffalo area, and also modifies the extreme heat that approaches from the Ohio Valley. Winters in the region are generally cloudy, cold and snowy, but are changeable, and often include rain and frequent thaws. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from "lake effect" snows and is very localized. The average date of the last frost is near the end of April in the Buffalo metro area, but in mid May further inland. Autumn is often one of the sunniest seasons of the year and very pleasant. Cold fronts from Canada become common in late October and the first measurable snow is usually in mid November.
