Olean
is located in southwestern New York on the banks of the Allegheny River near the Pennsylvania state line, about 54 miles east of Jamestown. It's a lovely town nestled in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, with a population of approximately 17,000 residents. The town bills itself as "the Enterprising City with the Hometown Touch," and offers something for everyone. Rock City Park in Olean is very popular with hikers, where paths wind their way through 320 million-year-old quartz boulders that project from the edge of mountains. The park reportedly has the world's largest exposure of quartz conglomerate, also known as "puddling stone." There is a stairway in a crevice that leads to a three-quarter mile long trail through gigantic boulders, and another stairway is believed to have been built by Seneca Indians who used the area as a fortress. A museum is also located in the park. The nearby Allegheny State Park also includes a vast network of hiking trails, campgrounds, and is known for its' fishing in crystal clear lakes and streams for brown, brook and rainbow trout. Other nearby attractions include Letchworth State Park, Moss Lake Wildlife Sanctuary and numerous golf courses. Niagara Falls is approximately 60 miles from Olean.

Western New York experiences four distinct seasons. Average January temperatures are above 22 degrees Fahrenheit. The Buffalo area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation, and over half of the annual snowfall comes from "lake effect" snows and is localized. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The average date of the last frost is near the end of April in the Buffalo metro area, but in mid May well inland. Summer is pleasant in this region, with plentiful sunshine, warm temperatures and moderate levels of humidity. Rainfall is adequate, many times coming at night so that it's seldom a problem for outdoor activities. The stabilizing effect of Lake Erie helps inhibit thunderstorms and modifies the extreme heat that approaches from the Ohio Valley.
