Portageville
is a hamlet located within the town of Genesee Falls in Wyoming County, New York. Genesee Falls is in the southeastern corner of the county and is approximately 35 miles south of Rochester. As of the 2000 census, the population of Portageville was 859 residents. The Genesee River Gorge, which has been called "The Grand Canyon of the East," is located near Portageville within Letchworth State Park. There are three large waterfalls in the park and as many as 50 waterfalls are found on the tributaries that flow into the river. The gorge that is formed by the river has rock walls rising up to 550 feet in places and it narrows to 400 feet across above the middle of the three falls. The highest waterfall in the state of New York is located in the park a short distance east of Inspiration Point Overlook, which is 0.4 miles west of the Park Visitor Center. Letchworth State Park also offers miles of hiking and biking trails, picnicking, horseback riding, white water rafting, fishing, boating and camping. In wintertime, there are horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sledding. Hot air balloon rides provide an unparalleled view of the spectacular Gorge and waterfalls. The park is named after William Pryor Letchworth, whose thousand-acre estate formed the heart of the park (the land was bequeathed to New York in 1906,) and a museum in his honor is now located within the park. Letchworth State Park was named one of the "top five romantic outdoor destinations in the United States," by Reserve American, along with places like Yosemite National Park in California.

Portageville Weather & Climate

A four-season climate with lots of snow in winter and pleasant summers describes the weather in western New York near Buffalo. In summer, sunshine is plentiful and humidity levels are moderate. The stabilizing effect of Lake Erie helps inhibit thunderstorms and enhance sunshine in the immediate Buffalo area, and also modifies the extreme heat that approaches from the Ohio Valley. Winters in the region are generally cloudy, cold and snowy, but are changeable, and often include rain and frequent thaws. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from "lake effect" snows and is very localized. The average date of the last frost is near the end of April in the Buffalo metro area, but in mid May further inland. Autumn is often one of the sunniest seasons of the year and very pleasant. Cold fronts from Canada become common in late October and the first measurable snow is usually in mid November.
