Lake-Bonaparte
is a fishing and boating lake located in Lewis County in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. It is also the name of a resort community located on the south shore of the lake. An interesting note is that the lake was named for Joseph Bonaparte, who was the King of Spain and Napoleon's brother, and who owned land in what is now Lewis County following the French Revolution. Lake Bonaparte is located 3.5 miles north of Route 3 on North Shore Road. It has a hard surface boat launch ramp and parking for 14 cars and trailers. Boat rentals are available on the lake, but limited, and aside from fishing, the lake is used for swimming, water skiing, tubing and snorkeling. Hiking, camping, golf, picnicking, hunting, cross country skiing, ice skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling are some of the other possible activities available in the area. Lake Bonaparte is near the Five Ponds Wilderness Area, and the nearby towns of Harrisville and Watertown offer antiquing, restaurants and other services. Lake Bonaparte is approximately an hour north of the city of Utica.

Lake Bonaparte Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains has variable, unpredictable weather. The climate is four seasons with winters marked by crisp, cold days and warm, pleasant summers and low humidity. Even though it's New York, the weather more closely resembles that of Vermont. A sunny day can turn into a rainy one; the temperature in May can be cool or climb to the low 90s. The snows start in September, but it is not unusual to experience an "Indian Summer" with warm days that extend into October. In general, however, summers are very pleasant with warm temperatures and low humidity, making it perfect for outdoor activities. In addition, the Adirondacks do not experience severe storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes like in other vacation spots in the country. Annual precipitation is around 39 inches, enough to keep the forests green and the streams flowing.
