Colton
is a small, friendly town of approximately 1,400, located in St. Lawrence County in the northern New York Adirondacks region. Tourism and forestry are the two main industries of the town. The scenic Racquette River, which is the third largest in the state, passes through the town of Colton and offers lots of fishing and boating opportunities. For hiking, Colton has the Stone Valley Trail, which is seven miles long (with several shorter loops possible) and follows the Racquette River as it plunges into the St. Lawrence River. It's especially interesting to geology buffs due to its sedimentary and metamorphic rock formations. The village of Colton is considered the hub of the St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Trail System, where hundreds of miles of groomed trails loop around the countryside. Cross-country skiing is available on ten miles of trails at Higley Flow State Park. Whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking are also available on the Racquette, and mountain biking is available on the popular Burntbridge Pond Trail. Higley Flow State Park is open for camping from Memorial Day through Labor Day and offers spacious wooded campsites and a boat launch for powerboats and canoes. There is also a sandy beach in the park and picnic areas with tables and grills and quiet, paved trails for cycling and hiking.

The weather in the Adirondacks is unpredictable. Even though it is New York, the weather more closely resembles that of Vermont. A sunny day can turn into a rainy one; the temperature in May can be cool or climb to the low 90s. The snows start in September, but it is not unusual to experience an "Indian Summer" with warm days that extend into October. In general, however, summers are very pleasant with warm temperatures and low humidity, making it perfect for outdoor activities. In addition, the Adirondacks do not experience severe storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes like in other vacation spots in the country. Annual precipitation is around 39 inches, enough to keep the forests green and the streams flowing.
