Alexandria-Bay is situated in the heart of the Thousand Islands region amidst the waters of the St. Lawrence River. More than 1800 islands dot the St. Lawrence and many of the most beautiful can be found in and surrounding Alexandria Bay. Some of the area attractions include legendary Boldt Castle on Heart Island, and ten miles down river is Singer Castle. In between the two castles is Millionaire's Row, an island of opulent homes of a bygone era. The St. Lawrence Seaway is active with trade from early April to late December, but has also become a popular family vacation destination. Activities include swimming, picnicking, fishing and boating - even scuba diving in the Bay's varied depths and clear waters. Alexandria Bay has been voted one of the top ten fishing locations in the United States, and boat rentals and boat charters are available to visitors. Two boat tour companies offer trips to Boldt Castle for lunch and dinner cruises, with limited tours to Cherry Island and tours of Singer Castle. There are also eight golf courses within 15 miles of the Bay, and a total of 32 courses in the Thousand Island region. More and more people are also choosing the Thousand Island region as the site for their wedding, and may even soon surpass Niagara Falls in the number of weddings per year.

The Thousand Island region has a varied climate, depending on location and elevation. Generally, The Thousand Islands has average January temperatures ranging from 14 degrees to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temps average between 68 and 72 degrees. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. There is plenty of sunshine in the summertime and low to moderate humidity levels. Lake-effect snow occurs when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. The location of these snowbands is determined by the direction of the wind. Due to the prevailing winds, areas south of Buffalo receive much more lake-effect snow than locations to the north. New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
