Smithville
is a small town in Jefferson County with a population of approximately 1,300. It's located near Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River in a rural, scenic part of the state known as the "North Country." To give one an idea of the rural nature of Jefferson County, keep in mind that the largest town and county seat is Watertown with a population of just 26,000 residents. Watertown is where you will find most of the shopping and services, including a new mall complete with a multi-plex theater located just off Interstate 81. What draws visitors to the area, however, are the many small towns and villages, with their quiet neighborhoods, old fashioned drive-in movie theaters, local festivals and state and local parks. Residents, as well as tourists, enjoy a great number of recreational activities year round in Smithville. Rafting is popular on the nearby Black River, and the area's lakes and rivers provide endless opportunities for fishing and boating. In the wintertime, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular sports around Smithville. Other attractions include the nearby village of Sackets Harbor, well known for its antiques and specialty shops, Old McDonalds Farm Village and Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site. Smithville is also home to a maple products business that gives tours and demonstrations for making pure maple syrup, maple cream and maple sugar.

The Thousand Islands region has a varied climate, depending on location and elevation. Generally, The Thousand Islands has average January temperatures ranging from 14 degrees to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temps average between 68 and 72 degrees. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. There is plenty of sunshine in the summertime and low to moderate humidity levels. Lake-effect snow occurs when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. The location of these snowbands is determined by the direction of the wind. Due to the prevailing winds, areas south of Buffalo receive much more lake-effect snow than locations to the north. New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
