Keene
, also called Keene Valley, is a small town located in Essex County, home of the famous "High Peaks" in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains in the northern part of the state. The town is host to the well-known annual Adirondack International Mountaineering Festival, which celebrates mountaineering with a variety of activities such as ice climbing, slide shows, mountaineering clinics and more. This charitable event supports local search and rescue groups and other organizations. Keene is in the center of one of the country's premier winter sports arenas. Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain are a short 35-minute drive away, and outdoor adventure abounds such as rock climbing, ice climbing, alpine and cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, bobsledding and luge. Summer is almost as popular as winter, with hiking, mountain biking, boating and fishing, camping, golf, white water rafting and horseback riding all popular sports in the area. Keene is also home to several country inns and mountain lodges, including Bark Eater, a 150-year-old farmhouse that was originally a stagecoach stopover that now offers cross-country skiing and horseback riding on the premises.

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
