Jay is a small town, or "hamlet" located in the northeastern part of the state, approximately a half-hour drive from Lake Placid. The township of Jay actually consists of three hamlets, Upper Jay, Jay and Au Sable. The area surrounding Jay contains some of the most breathtaking scenery in Adirondack Mountains, where the East Branch of the Au Sable River meets the West Branch of the river. It's a peaceful region of bed & breakfast inns, historical villages, swimming and fishing holes, hiking and biking trails and peaceful picnicking spots. The town of Jay is filled with small-town charm, and is known for its craft shops and cultural events. It makes a charming overnight stop, or a vacation destination of its own. The town of Jay is just eight miles to the Olympic ski center at Whiteface Mountain, and 17 miles to Lake Placid's chic shops and fine restaurants. Just an hour or less takes you to Lake Champlain, the Au Sable Chasm, Saranac Lake and Fort Ticonderoga. The hiking trails of the High Peaks is approximately a twenty minute drive from the township of Jay, and canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, golf, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice skating are also available in the area. Jay is also home to many first-rate Adirondack artists and craftspeople. Many of their works are on display in local shops and galleries, and a number of private studios are open to the public, as well.

Jay Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
