Whiteface-Mountain
has been ranked as the top ski resort in the eastern United States by readers of SKI Magazine for three years, and was the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics, the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games and the 2003 U.S. National Alpine Championships. Whiteface Mountain has 75 trails and a vertical drop of 3,430 feet, which is the greatest vertical drop in the east, and ten lifts, including one eight-passenger gondola. Children's programs are available on the Mountain, as well as a snow sports school, lodging and shopping. Winter sports, aside from skiing, include bobsled, luge, ice skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing and ice fishing. In summertime, Whiteface Mountain offers gondola rides that whisks visitors from the base lodge to the top of Little Whiteface in less than fifteen minutes. This thrilling ride goes over wooded areas and breathtaking views of the Au Sable River, past the Adirondack High Peaks and at the summit, an observation deck and picnic tables awaits visitors. Other activities in the Whiteface Mountain area in summer include mountain biking, hiking, fishing, rock climbing and golf. Whiteface Mountain is ten minutes to Lake Placid and 30 minutes to Lake George. An Oktoberfest is held on Whiteface Mountain in early October, and features games, amusement rides, German food and beer, a craft market, pony rides and a climbing wall.

Whiteface Mountain Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
