Saranac-Lake is in the heart of one of the most popular recreational playgrounds in the state of New York - the northern Adirondack Mountains, approximately ten miles northwest of Lake Placid. The small village of Saranac Lake is definitely more laid-back and quiet than Lake Placid, with a tranquil shoreline that is lined with gingerbread cottages, most of which were built in the late 1800s. First settled in 1819, Saranac Lake thrived on logging until 1876, when Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, who suffered from tuberculosis, came to Saranac Lake to live out what he believed to be his last months. To his amazement, the fresh mountain air restored his health, thus forming the basis for a curing regimen that established Saranac Lake as a pioneer health resort. Also, author Robert Lewis Stevenson spent the winter of 1888 in a small cottage on Saranac Lake and it is now preserved as a museum. Downtown Saranac Lake offers visitors shopping and other services, plus year-round theater, art galleries and free outdoor summer concerts. Miles of hiking trails surround the village, and other outdoor recreational activities include swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, camping, golf, snowmobiling, ice skating and snowboarding. Saranac Lake hosts an annual ten-day Winter Carnival, which is the oldest winter festival in the eastern United States.

Saranac Lake Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
