Westport is a small town located inside the Adirondack State Park, with Lake Champlain and the border of Vermont forming the east line of town. This location near the high country of the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains of Vermont is a destination of outstanding beauty and many outdoor recreational possibilities. Historically, the town of Westport was where 19th century passengers disembarked from steamboats to continue their trip west via stagecoach. Today, it's called "A Gateway to the Adirondack Mountains." The Adirondack State Park is the largest park in the continental United States (six million acres,) and offers boating and fishing, hiking, camping, biking and downhill and cross-country skiing. Westport has a full service marina, an 18-hole golf course, two outstanding lakeside children's summer camps, and special events such as concerts in the park and live entertainment at local venues. You'll find small friendly shops, casual and fine dining, and various historic bed & breakfast inns in Westport. Two interesting bits of trivia about Westport are that it's the "birthplace of the Adirondack chair," fashioned by Thomas Lee in 1903, and it's home to Camp Dudley YMCA, the oldest summer camp in continuous operation in the nation. The center of Westport is just four miles east of the Westport Exit 31 and it's also accessible via the Crown Point Bridge and the Essex-Charlotte Ferry, both about twelve miles from the town's center.

Westport Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
