Ticonderoga
is most well known for its' historical significance. Its' name comes from the Iroquois word for "land between waters," which is appropriate for its' location on the western shore of Lake Champlain and the northern end of Lake George in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Toconderoga's most visited attraction is Fort Ticonderoga, an 18th century fort built in 1775 that was used in the Seven Years War and The American Revolution. The Fort offers 30-minute guided tours, a world class museum, costumed interpreters and daily musket demonstrations. Other attractions in town include the Heritage Museum, the Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum and the La Chute River Interpretive Trail. The road to Mount Defiance, which is the route made by a British General in 1777, offers visitors an observation deck with panoramic views of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains of Vermont. In addition to the historical attractions, Ticonderoga has access to many rivers, ponds and streams, and two of the most picturesque fresh water inland lakes in the U.S. - Lake George and Lake Champlain. Together they offer some of the best fishing found in the country and are the site of numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year. Other activities include scenic boat rides on the lakes, swimming, hiking, golf, a unique 4th of July Celebration, and ice fishing, skating, snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the wintertime.

The weather in the Adirondacks can be variable, but historically the area has not been subjected to the devastation of hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes that plague other parts of the country. There are four distinct seasons with winters marked by consistent snowfall and cold, crisp days. Summers are warm and pleasant, with temperatures rarely climbing above 90 degrees, and evenings with low humidity. In fact, in some areas of higher elevation, summer evenings can be downright cool. Generally, there is no rainy season in the Adirondacks, but rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season. Rain in the mountains has uneven patterns. It can be raining in one spot and ten miles away it will be dry as a bone. The western Adirondacks can experience lake effect snowstorms as early as October, from Watertown to Old Forge and areas south.
