Severance is a small village located in Essex County in the heart of the six million-acre Adirondack Park Preserve near Paradox Lake and Lake Champlain. Whatever type of recreational activity you're looking for, you'll likely find it in the area surrounding Severance. Whiteface Mountain is nearby and offers some of the best downhill skiing and snowboarding in the U.S. In addition, hundreds of miles of cross-country skiing trails are easily accessible from Severance. Lake Placid is just a short drive away and has been rated "the #1 place to cross country ski in North America" by Snow Country Magazine, and of course, you will also find endless opportunities for ice skating at Lake Placid. Summer is almost as busy as winter in Severance, with activities such as swimming, boating and fishing, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking and camping available in the area. Just minutes from Severance is the village of Essex, often called New York's "most historic hamlet." It contains one of the most intact collections of pre-Civil War architecture in America, and for centuries has welcomed travelers and sightseers who are enthralled by the pristine beauty of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Other nearby attractions include Cobble Hill Golf Course, one of the oldest golf courses in America, built in 1896, and the Adirondack History Center Museum & Colonial Garden.

Severance Weather & Climate

The weather in the Adirondacks can be variable, but historically the area has not been subjected to the devastation of hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes that plague other parts of the country. There are four distinct seasons with winters marked by consistent snowfall and cold, crisp days. Summers are warm and pleasant, with temperatures rarely climbing above 90 degrees, and evenings with low humidity. In fact, in some areas of higher elevation, summer evenings can be downright cool. Generally, there is no rainy season in the Adirondacks, but rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season. Rain in the mountains has uneven patterns. It can be raining in one spot and ten miles away it will be dry as a bone. The western Adirondacks can experience lake effect snowstorms as early as October, from Watertown to Old Forge and areas south.
