Chestertown
is a village that is right in the middle of the Adirondack Park Preserve in the northern part of the state near Interstate 87. Four major lakes and numerous pristine rivers, brooks and streams are nearby, making Chestertown a great place to base an Adirondack Mountains vacation. This beautiful wilderness region offers an abundance of outdoor sports and other activities. Just a sample of what you can expect to find here includes fly fishing, rafting, canoeing, boating, rock climbing, hiking and horseback riding. There are unlimited scenic trails for biking and hiking, from mountains to lakeside. Visitors flock to the area in the wintertime for the skiing, both downhill and cross-country, as well as snowboarding, sledding, ice skating and snowshoeing. Multiple levels of terrain are available in the Chestertown region offering skiers a variety of experiences. A dozen golf courses are also located within 30 miles of town, and free summer concerts are given at nearby Brant Lake. Chestertown is a quiet retreat where you can be as active as you want, or simply relax by a crackling fire with a good book. Either way, visitors enjoy the ambience, quaint shops and great restaurants of the region. Chestertown is approximately two hours from Lake Placid and 45 minutes to Saratoga.

The weather in the Adirondacks can be variable, but historically the area has not been subjected to the devastation of hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes that plague other parts of the country. There are four distinct seasons with winters marked by consistent snowfall and cold, crisp days. Summers are warm and pleasant, with temperatures rarely climbing above 90 degrees, and evenings with low humidity. In fact, in some areas of higher elevation, summer evenings can be downright cool. Generally, there is no rainy season in the Adirondacks, but rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season. Rain in the mountains has uneven patterns. It can be raining in one spot and ten miles away it will be dry as a bone. The western Adirondacks can experience lake effect snowstorms as early as October, from Watertown to Old Forge and areas south.
