Callicoon is a charming old town or "hamlet" located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains along the Delaware River. The community dates back to the 1600s when Dutch settlers traveling west from the Hudson Valley settled here. The early people found an area of beautiful surroundings - mountains, forests, rivers and fields - and also an abundance of turkey, which is how the town got its' interesting name. They marked this location on their maps as Kollikoonkill, meaning Wild Turkey Creek. Today, visitors are still drawn to the area for its' pristine beauty and abundance of recreational opportunities. Although the historical town dates back more than 300 years, there are very few buildings dating before 1888 when a devastating fire destroyed most of the town. However there are lots of turn-of-the-century and mid-century buildings, including the picturesque Callicoon Theater, built in 1948, which remains exactly as it was built half a century ago. The nearby Delaware River provides activities such as canoeing, fishing, boating, rafting and tubing. Other sports include tennis, golf, birding, hiking, skiing and wildlife viewing. Callicoon holds a weekly Farmer's Market on Sundays, May through October at the Callicoon Creek Park, and an annual Street Fair, usually held in July, as well as numerous other community events throughout the year.

Callicoon Weather & Climate

The Catskill Mountains  has a climate with many variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
