Hancock is a peaceful village located in Delaware County, approximately 42 miles southeast of Binghamton on the Pennsylvania State line. The town bills itself as "The Gateway to the Delaware River," where the east and west branches of the river converge at the base of Point Mountain and form the headwaters that eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean. During the 1960s, New York State Route 17, which runs through Hancock, was designated as "most scenic highway" in the nation and thousands of visitors started flocking to the area. It is especially popular in the fall when the gorgeous colors of autumn peak around the first week of October. Fall is also the time of the year that yields a generous maple syrup and maple butter producing season. Maple syrup from Hancock is shipped all over the world and rivals the famous Vermont Syrups. Wintertime brings heavy snowfalls and skiers who enjoy several ski resorts located with 15-45 minutes of the town of Hancock. Hundreds of miles of old railroad beds in the area are now snowmobile trails. In the spring and summer, visitors come to play golf at Hancock's two public courses, one of which was designed by legendary golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones. Hancock is approximately two and half-hours from New York City and offers dozens of good restaurants, antique stores, hotels and bed and breakfast inns.

Hancock Weather & Climate

The Central Region of New York enjoys a four-season climate with lots of sunshine in the summer and cold, snowy conditions in the winter. This region is a unique mix of farmland, sparkling lakes and cascading waterfalls and other geological wonders. The area around Syracuse receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation, and annual precipitation is from 36 to 44 inches of rain and snowmelt. Summers are pleasant, generally with only a handful of days when humidity is really a problem. Autumn is sunny and cool, but brief. Snow is usually on the ground from Christmas until mid-March, although a period when the ground is bare is also not uncommon. Severe weather such as hurricanes or tornadoes are generally not experienced in New York, as they are in other parts of the country.
