Bethel is called the "Jewel of the Catskills," located in the middle of Sullivan County, about 90 miles northwest of New York City and only 20 miles from the Delaware River. This little town has a permanent population of about 4,300, but that number swells to around 10,000 during the summer tourist season. In 1969, Bethel drew worldwide attention when over 600,000 people descended on this quiet town for the infamous Woodstock Music Festival. After hosting the festival, things in Bethel went back to normal, and today the historic field where the concert took place is the site of the Day in the Garden concerts and the location of the Bethel Performing Arts Center. Another big attraction in town is the Fall Garden Harvest Market, which draws up to 3,500 visitors on autumn weekends. Being just an hour and a half from New York City, Bethel and Sullivan County (which has been called "the forgotten frontier,") have become popular with city dwellers looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful, natural setting. Dozens of recreational activities are available in the area, including golf, boating and fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, birding and wildlife watching and wintertime snowmobiling, skiing, skating and ice fishing. Bethel is home to Lake Superior State Park, open dawn to dusk year round and featuring swimming, boat rentals, fishing, picnic facilities, volleyball and a food concession.

Bethel Weather & Climate

The Catskill Mountains  has a climate with many variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
