Wilson is located on the shores of Lake Ontario in northern Niagara County, New York. There is also a village of Wilson located within the Town of Wilson. The town has a population of approximately 1,200 and is home to a small boat harbor for Lake Ontario. The town of Wilson was first established in 1818 and incorporated in 1858, located twelve miles east of Old Fort Niagara. The well-protected small boat harbor contains several marinas and boat launching facilities and offers sailing yacht tours and fishing tours. The town of Wilson boasts some of the best trout, bass and salmon fishing in the surrounding waters. Tuscarora State Park is just a short drive away on Route 18 (directly on Lake Ontario) and offers swimming, canoeing, picnicking, hiking trails and playgrounds. Other area recreational opportunities include biking, golf and birdwatching. Niagara Falls is only a half-hour drive from Wilson along the scenic "Seaway Trail," and some of the other many attractions in the area include Maid-of-the-Mist boat tours, Cave of the Winds, casinos, museums, wineries, antique shops, great restaurants and more. Also, include a stop in nearby Lewiston, which claims to be "the most historic square mile in America," and the original birthplace of Niagara Falls.

Wilson Weather & Climate

The Niagara Falls area experiences a fairly humid, continental-type climate, but with a definite "maritime" flavor due to strong influences from the Great Lakes. Winters are cloudy, cold and snowy, but with frequent thaws. Rain can also be experienced any season of the year. It is important to note that the Buffalo area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from "lake effect" snows and is very localized. Spring comes slowly to western New York. The ice pack on Lake Erie does not usually go away until mid April and the lake remains chilly through most of May. Summers are pleasant, with warm temperatures and moderate humidity. Autumn is very nice, but brief and the first frost can be expected in late September over interior sections, but not until mid October in the Buffalo metro area.
