Niagara-Falls is, of course, most well known for being the home of Niagara Falls State Park. Located in the western region of the state between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, Niagara Falls is nothing short of spectacular. The falls were created by the recession and melting of a mammoth ice sheet some 50,000 years ago that pushed the land up behind it, forming huge ridges. Slowly, as the ice melted, it formed Lake Erie and its surrounding lowlands, and eventually overflowed, creating the falls. Today, bridges across the river connect the cities of Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario. The American Falls are higher, but not as wide as the Canadian Falls (also called Horseshoe Falls,) and Bridal Veil Falls are also located at Niagara Falls. Be sure to take the boat trip on the Maid of the Mist, which takes you on a breathtaking cruise past the base of the falls. Hike to Goat Island to the Cave of the Winds, where you can follow walkways to within 25 feet of the falls. While the falls are the primary event, the city of Niagara Falls has an amazing array of other sightseeing attractions, and it's said that Niagara Falls has "almost as many places to shop in the city as there are ways to view the falls." Additional places to visit include the Aquarium of Niagara; Niagara's Wax Museum, the Niagara Power Project Visitor Center, the Schoellkopf Geological Museum and much more.

Niagara Falls Weather & Climate

The Niagara Falls area experiences a fairly humid, continental-type climate, but with a definite "maritime" flavor due to strong influences from the Great Lakes. Winters are cloudy, cold and snowy, but with frequent thaws. Rain can also be experienced any season of the year. It is important to note that the Buffalo area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from "lake effect" snows and is very localized. Spring comes slowly to western New York. The ice pack on Lake Erie does not usually go away until mid April and the lake remains chilly through most of May. Summers are pleasant, with warm temperatures and moderate humidity. Autumn is very nice, but brief and the first frost can be expected in late September over interior sections, but not until mid October in the Buffalo metro area.
