Lewiston
is located along the Lower Niagara River just ten minutes from Niagara Falls. There is also a village of Lewiston situated within the town of Lewiston. The town, which includes the village, has a population of approximately 16,000 residents. The village claims to be "the most historic square mile in America." Lewiston is believed to be the original birthplace of Niagara Falls some 12,000 years ago, near the present location of Artpark. Over time, the falls eroded through seven miles of solid rock. You can follow the path the falls took by following Niagara Gorge which begins in Lewiston. The town of Lewiston is also where French explorers traded with local Indians and pioneered commerce on the Great Lakes, where the U.S. invaded Canada, where the "cocktail" was first invented and where escaping slaves made their last stop on the treacherous Underground Railroad. Attractions in town include the Lewiston Museum, located in a building that was built in 1835 as St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Of course, the magnificent Niagara Falls is one of Lewiston's main draws. Highlights include a boat trip on the Maid of the Mist, which takes you on a cruise past the base of the falls, a hike to Goat Island and Cave of the Winds and a visit to the Aquarium of Niagara and Schoellkopf Geological Museum. Other museums near Lewiston include Niagara's Discovery Center, the Daredevil Museum and the Niagara Aerospace Museum.

The Niagara Falls area experiences a fairly humid, continental-type climate, but with a definite "maritime" flavor due to strong influences from the Great Lakes. Winters are cloudy, cold and snowy, but with frequent thaws. Rain can also be experienced any season of the year. It is important to note that the Buffalo area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from "lake effect" snows and is very localized. Spring comes slowly to western New York. The ice pack on Lake Erie does not usually go away until mid April and the lake remains chilly through most of May. Summers are pleasant, with warm temperatures and moderate humidity. Autumn is very nice, but brief and the first frost can be expected in late September over interior sections, but not until mid October in the Buffalo metro area.
