Virgil is a small town of approximately 2,200 people in Cortland County, central New York. U.S. Route 11 passes through the east part of the town. As part of Cortland County, Virgil has lots of recreational activities - both indoor and outdoor. The Cortland Regional Sports Council provides information on sporting events in the area. The J.M. McDonald Sports Complex, located at the Cortland County Fairgrounds in the town of Cortland, has indoor soccer, hockey, figure skating, lacrosse, NFL Flag Football, 4-H programs as well as an indoor walking track, meeting facilities, and a venue for major events. The area surrounding the town of Virgil is great for fishing, with over 130 miles of trout streams, 22 miles of rivers and over 25 lakes and ponds. Just a few miles south is Whitney Point Lake in Broome County, a 1,200 acre lake that is regularly stocked with bass, pike and pan fish. Other area activities include hiking, biking, golf, snowboarding and cross-country skiing, ice skating, picnicking and camping. Virgil is considered part of the Finger Lakes Region, conveniently located near Interstate 81, approximately four hours from New York City. For the non-sports minded, Cortland County is filled with antique stores and other shopping venues, great restaurants, cozy bed & breakfast inns and other great sightseeing opportunities.

Virgil Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
