Ithaca is located at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, one of the eleven Finger Lakes, in the central part of the state. This historic city is well-known as an education center (home to Cornell University,) and also famous for its many state parks, beautiful waterfalls and scenic gorges. In the heart of the Finger Lakes region, the Ithaca area offers 70-plus wineries, quaint villages and towns, quiet, picturesque country roads, swimming, boating, fishing, mountain biking, cross country skiing - the list could go on and on. Hikers love the area where there are miles and miles of scenic trails through state parks and forests, around waterfalls and steep gorges. Just a sample of the parks in the area include Ithaca Falls, where receding waters and erosion formed a one-mile long gorge which includes six waterfalls and many cascades and rapids. Other parks include the Allen H. Treman State Marine Park, an area of rustic beauty with craggy gorges and winding trails with names like fire and brimstone and waterfalls named Lucifer Falls and Devils Kitchen. Buttermilk Falls State Park descends more than 500 feet in a series of cascades, forming a natural pool at its base for swimming and picnicking. This is just a sample - there are dozens more parks and hiking trails in the area. Back in town, don't miss the Ithaca Commons, one of the largest pedestrian malls in America. This historic, award-winning commons is a marketplace with an international flair where one can browse among many unique specialty shops.

Ithaca Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
