Cortland lies between Syracuse and Binghamton in central New York, within the former Central New York Military Tract. As of the 2000 census, the city of Cortland had a population of 18,740. It serves as the county seat for Cortland County. Settled in 1791 and made a village in 1853, Cortland is the closest incorporated city to the geographic center of the state of New York. It is known as the "Crown City," due to its central location on a plain formed by the convergence of seven valleys. The elevation of Cortland is 1,130 feet above sea level. The city and surrounding area offer an abundance of recreation and other entertainment. Cortland is home to the Dowd Fine Arts Theatre, the Center for the Arts and the Cortland Repertory Theatre. There are also several historical attractions in Cortland, including the 1890 House Museum and Center for Victorian Art and the Cortland County Historical Society. Ten golf courses are in the area, along with six city parks with tennis courts, swimming pools, picnicking areas, and a skateboard park and basketball courts. Other activities in the Cortland area include hiking and camping, cross-country and downhill skiing. For a relaxing vacation, the town of Cortland makes a perfect base for exploring all of central New York's many attractions.

Cortland Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
