Shelter-Island is nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, surrounded by Gardiners and Peconic Bays. The name is a translation of the Indian name which meant, "island sheltered by islands," and the schooner Paragon, which ran blockade during the Napoleonic Wars, was built here. Shelter Island is more than 8,000 acres of land and marsh that can be reached by ferries from both Greenport and North Haven, which is north of the town of Sag Harbor. Wealthy sugar merchants from Barbados who were searching for white oak to use for making their barrels first settled the island. Later, it became a shelter for Quakers who were being persecuted throughout the colonies, but a turning point came in the late 1800s when the island began to see more summer visitors. The New York Yacht Club had a station here, and the Shelter Island Yacht Club was founded in 1886. The first hotel on the island burned in 1896 and was replaced by another, but this one burned down in 1910, never to be rebuilt. Today Shelter Island is filled with charming inns and lodges, fine restaurants, quaint shops and miles of scenic shoreline. It's a popular place for kayaking, where the shallow inlets are perfect for the sport. The Mashomack Nature Conservancy is a great place for a hike, and golf, tennis, sailing, biking and horseback riding are all available on the island.

Shelter Island Weather & Climate

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April's warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
