Kinderhook-Lake is a tranquil, 375-acre lake located in the southern part of the state, near the village of Kinderhook, on the East Side of the Hudson River in the vicinity that is commonly referred to as "The Berkshires, New York." Native Americans called the lake "Great Fish Lake," and today it is still known for its' excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, perch and bass. Kinderhook Lake is also a good swimming lake. Other outdoor activities in the area include hiking, horseback riding, golf, and downhill and cross country skiing. If you love antiques, this is the place to come - there are tons of quaint antique stores in the small towns and villages and the surrounding countryside. The town of Kinderhook is an old Dutch village that was settled in the 1600s shortly after explorer Henry Hudson sailed up the river that bears his name. The town originally stretched all the way from the Hudson River to what is now the town of Chatham. Kinderhook still retains much of its' colonial Dutch atmosphere, and today is most well known for being the site of the estate of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States. Van Buren purchased the estate in 1839 during his Presidency, and it is now a National Historic Site that encompasses a 38.5-acre park. Several other historical attractions are in the area including the 1785 Dutch Van Schaack House and the 1820 Federal style James Vanderpoel House, which is now a museum.

Kinderhook Lake Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
