Ghent
is located in the Hudson Valley region in the southeastern portion of the state. Its' unique name is from the Belgium city of the same name and was so named by Palatines, who fled Germany to escape persecution. Ghent is well known for being the home of the Art Omi International Art Center, a retreat that sits high on a bluff overlooking the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. The property, which is available for groups only for vacations, retreats and other special occasions, includes a magnificent 90-acre outdoor sculpture park called "The Fields." A path for viewing the sculptures follows the edge of a natural pond that is surrounded by peaceful woods. Seating areas are dotted throughout the park, and biking and cross-country skiing trails are also inside The Fields. Other outdoor recreation in the Ghent community includes horseback riding, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, wildlife viewing, hiking and golf. Ghent is also home to the Parker- O'Malley Air Museum and the Ghent Playhouse. The town is located just south of the village of Chatham, which is known for its railroading history, antique stores and quaint shops. Other attractions that are just a short drive from Ghent include the Shaker Museum in Old Chatham, Lake Taconic State Park, Bash Bish Falls and Copake Lake.

Ghent Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
