Corning is the name of two places in Steuben County, New York in the Finger Lakes Region. There is the city of Corning and the town of Corning, which is adjacent to the city. Most frequently, Corning refers to the city. Called "The Crystal City," Corning is home to the Corning Museum of Glass, which boasts being the worlds largest glass museum and houses glass objects from antiquity to the present. The museum also houses The Rakow Library, which is one of the worlds major glass research centers. The city of Corning is considered a southern gateway to the stunning Finger Lakes Region of Central New York. It is nestled in a beautiful river valley with steep hills and offers an abundance of exciting activities for everyone in the family. Cornings downtown area has fine restaurants, antique shops, glass making studios, galleries, specialty shops, as well as local theater, ballet and music concerts. Corning Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
