Millerton
is a village located within the town of North East in Dutchess County, near the Connecticut border. The town borders Taconic State Park (the Rudd Pond Area) and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail is also located nearby. Taconic State Park is situated along eleven miles of the Taconic Mountain Range and shares a border with Massachusetts and Connecticut. There are two developed areas in the park: Rudd Pond and Copake Falls. Both offer an extensive trail system with terrain that varies from easy to challenging and offers spectacular views. The park also offers a beach, picnic tables and pavilions, hiking, fishing, a boat launch, ice skating, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. There is an extensive campground at Copake Falls that offers primitive campsites, as well as those seeking a more home like experience. Other things to do include hiking and biking along the newly developed Harlem Valley Rail Trail, hiking to Bash Bish Falls (just over the Massachusetts border) or up Brace Mountain, which is the highest point in Dutchess County. Other attractions near Millerton include the Iron Works Museum, where visitors can learn about the iron industry at the former site of the Copake Iron Works, established in 1845.

The Hudson Valley Region which generally refers to the canyon area of the Hudson River and surrounding communities in New York State, has a four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but there are variations. Some years there is no snow or ice and the temperatures and river stays quite mild - high 40s to low 50s. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring. Summers in the Hudson Valley are hazy, warm and humid. September can be a mixed bag of clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is one of the best months in the region for hiking and other outdoor sports. The weather is cooler and less humid then, with crisp, clear views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands.
