Huron
is a small town located in the northeastern part of Wayne County, New York, near Sodus Bay in the Finger Lakes Region. It is approximately 40 minutes from Rochester and Syracuse. First settled around 1706, the town of Huron was created from the town of Wolcott in 1826 and called "Port Bay." In 1834, the town's name was changed to honor the Huron tribe and from 1826 to 1837, a large Shaker community was located within the town. A part of Great Sodus Bay extends into the northwest corner of the town, with East Bay to the north and a part of Port Bay in the northeast corner of town. The lakeshore rises in a series of dramatic bluffs, the largest of which is Chimney Bluffs at 175 feet above the lake. Chimney Bluffs State Park is located in Huron on the eastern shore of Sodus Bay. The park has four miles of hiking trails, including a mile-lone trail along the Bluffs from the west entrance to the east entrance. Swimming is not allowed here and parking is free. The Chimney Bluffs area has been a New York landmark for decades. According to historians, smugglers used the area as a landing point while transporting liquor from Canada during Prohibition. Operated informally as a privately owned recreation area for years, the area was acquired by the state of New York in 1963 and soon thereafter became a state park. Recreational activities in the area include hiking, biking, fishing, boating, sailing, golf, swimming, windsurfing, jet skiing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a giant "heat sink" that retain the warm temperatures of summer in their waters, slowly releasing it in the fall and early winter. This helps moderate temperatures along the shoreline. Therefore, communities right along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the lakes. This also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
