Hunter-Mountain is a well-known ski resort area, located in Greene County in the Catskills between the towns of Palenville and Lexington. It is also the site of the village of Hunter, once a busy terminus of the Stony Clove Branch of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad, which now serves as a base town for skiers. Hunter Mountain is known as "the closest big mountain to metro New York," and claims to be "The Snowmaking Capital of the World." It's a busy place, especially during snow season, and offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, nighttime skiing and more. The mountain itself has 53 trails and eleven lifts, with a vertical drop of 1,600 feet. In summer, there are trails for hiking, horseback riding, swimming, fishing and boating in nearby lakes, and mountain biking. Hunter Mountain is home to a picturesque 18-hole golf course, with a driving range, restaurant/bar and video arcade and an ice skating rink. Hunter Mountain is also host to several special events throughout the year including an International Celtic Festival, the German Alps Festival, Microbrew & Wine Festival and Oktoberfest. The Hunter Mountain Fair, usually held in September, is an old-fashioned country fair with great food, games, live music, children's crafts, puppet shows, magic shows, a chainsaw carving contest and a frog jumping contest.

Hunter Mountain Weather & Climate

The Catskills region has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, but without the stifling, oppressive heat and humidity of some coastal areas. Normally, the hottest week of the year in the Catskills is the third week of July. September offers mild days and cool nights and October is a kaleidoscope of color. "Jack Frost" will likely make his first appearance in October, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of that month. November is unpredictable and with December comes colder temperatures and more moisture - either in the form of rain or snow. The full force of the winter season arrives in January and stays around until March in the Catskills. Average January temperatures are a good three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at over two thousand feet.
